“BROADWAY’S BEST, BIG BAND STYLE” AT CUNNEEN-HACKETT ARTS CENTER JULY 13-15

The Cunneen-Hackett Arts Center in Poughkeepsie will be the venue for a swinging “Broadway’s Best, Big Band Style” show presented by The Big Band Sound 25-piece jazz orchestra to benefit the Sparrow’s Nest local charity. Performances are Friday, July 13th at 8 p.m., Saturday, July 14th at 8 p.m., and Sunday, July 15th at 2 p.m. General Admission is $20 and tickets can be purchased in advance at thebigbandsound.com

“Broadway’s Best, Big Band Style” will feature The Big Band Sound 25-piece jazz orchestra, including six vocalists and swing dance performers, in a show spotlighting smash hits from Broadway. At the core of the Great American Songbook are timeless songs that originated on the Broadway stage or later made their way onto Broadway. In this show, songs will be performed from all of the greatest Broadway composers and lyricists, including Cole Porter, Richard Rogers, Lorenz Hart, Oscar Hammerstein, George and Ira Gershwin, Fats Waller, and Jerome Kern.  Plus, classic standards will be presented ranging from Broadway’s Golden Age, including “South Pacific”, “My Fair Lady”, and “West Side Story”, to more modern shows, including “Chicago”, “Cats”, and “Beauty and the Beast”.

What better way to enjoy a journey through Broadway favorites than in the most exciting setting of a live big band. Many of the selections to be presented in “Broadway’s Best, Big Band Style” were popularized by big bands and big band singers, including Bobby Darin’s “Mack the Knife”, Frank Sinatra’s “Hello Dolly” with the Count Basie band, Ella Fitzgerald’s “Pick Yourself Up”, and Benny Goodman’s “Sing, Sing, Sing”, which has been featured in many Broadway dance shows. Also included will be the Andrew Sisters’ showstopper “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” and the rousing anthem “Lullaby of Broadway”.

The Big Band Sound 25-piece jazz orchestra has performed throughout the Hudson Valley for over 40 years and this “Broadway’s Best, Big Band Style” show will continue in the series of “Sinatra Sounds, Big Band Style”, “All-American, Big Band Style”, and “Hollywood, Big Band Style” shows they presented the past three summers to great acclaim.

General Admission is $20 and tickets can be purchased in advance at thebigbandsound.com. Proceeds from this show will benefit the Sparrow’s Nest local charity. At last year’s show, $3000 was raised for the charity. Sparrow’s Nest of the Hudson Valley provides meals to the families of caregivers diagnosed with cancer.
