Death and Rebirth – An Artist Statement by Michael Anzalone
I’ve always had a conditional response to New York Winters. The darker hours and gray skies change the landscape and the indoor air makes me want to hibernate. Then the seasons change and Spring like hope is eternal, life continues. I started painting this Spring at the first signs of color from mother earth. Whispering Spring became the trajectory for my summer and this exhibit. The Heather Gardens of Fort Tryon Park is an oasis overlooking the New Jersey Palisades on the Hudson River and home. Here nature has a timeless consciousness that creates its own beauty into form. I always work from life. I paint in the way that nature expresses itself to me and this is why some of my work is representational and some abstract. This exhibit evolved in my home and in the atelier studio space of The Arts Students League of New York. My canvases were painted using my drawings, photographs and memory. As an addition to these 2017 works on canvas I am presenting Plein Air watercolors of the same subject from 2014.
As nature has expressed itself to me, art makes a personal statement public.
