The Cunneen Hackett Art Center, the Cocoon Theatre Visual Arts Initiative and the Barrett Art Center are proud to announce a solo show by award winning photographer and muralist, FRANC PALAIA

This exhibit will be part of the Poughkeepsie Open Studios on June 16 & 17, 2018.

What & Who: FRANC PALAIA will present a sampling of his photographic series on Cuban Murals and Street Art. The show includes an unorthodox combination of manipulated color photographs of Cuban street art Mashed-Up with street art from other countries and states such as Italy, Sardinia, New Jersey and other locations. The show will fill both theater galleries and will consist of mixed media photo-works that are highly manipulated with paint, collage, sanded surfaces, cut and torn and finally presenting

them on odd shaped plywood and cement board mounts. Palaia will debut two new large free -standing two-sided photo sculptural works as well. A Power Point talk on this series by the artist will follow the opening in the theater at 6:30pm -7:30pm.

Mr. Palaia is an accomplished multi-media artist with an extensive record of hundreds of solo and group exhibitions on four continents. Some of his exhibits include the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NY, the Whitney Museum Annex, Newark Museum, The High Museum of Art, Samuel Dorsky Museum, the New Museum, PS 1, Exit Art, OK Harris gallery, Artists Space, Fundacio Salvador Dali in Spain, Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, the International Urban Art Fair in Paris, Arte Contemporanea in Torino, Italy, Vassar College, Center for Photography in Woodstock, the Jersey City Museum, the Neon Museum in LA, Grounds for Sculpture and the White House.

He is a recipient of 21 grants, fellowships and residencies in several categories; they include photography, murals, sculpture, public art, artists books, and curating and they include the Rome Prize, L. Comfort Tiffany grant, two Polaroid Sponsorships, a Puffin Foundation grant, Rutgers

Printmaking grant, Ludwig-Vogelstein grant, three NYFA grants, three Executive Arts Awards, three Dutchess County Arts Council grants, two New Jersey Arts Council grants among others.

His artworks are in many public collections that include the Museum of Modern Art, Brooklyn Museum, the Newark and Montclair Museums, Johnson & Johnson’s, Prudential Insurance, Kean University, Robert Wood Medical Center to name a few. In 2017 Franc’s photographs were featured in the film, “Shadowman” by Oren Jacoby and was screened at the Tribeca Film Festival. Hi murals have appeared in feature films and NBC TV.
