These landmark Victorian buildings were underwritten by John Guy Vassar and
Matthew Vassar Jr. The Vassar Brothers were the nephews of the founder of Vassar College.
This philanthropic family dedicated their lives and fortunes to the enrichment
of the community. In 1883, they sought to establish sites that fulfilled the needs of
the era and their vision of a better society. The large Italianate structure at #9 Vassar Street
was designed and used as a home for aged men and the theater building at #12 Vassar Street was
created to bring the Arts, Culture and the discussion of science and nature to the City of Poughkeepsie.
